The new residential project “Boliger på Indiakaj” is located in Copenhagens former harbour area near the Citadel (Kastellet) and Langelinie waterfront. The area is characterized by buildings from the early 1900s with compact red brick buildings with slate-carved saddle roofs.

The new constructions consist of 23 apartments of different sizes, spread over three floors and the roof area. The shape of the rooftops is asymmetrical and adapts to the scale of the neighbouring buildings.

The wall surfaces are varied and have large facade sections and windows in oak trees, as well as balconies that open the apartments up to the city, the harbour thus emphasizing the unique location of the building.

The buildings’ compact form and brick clad facades are interrupted by large windows and balconies to draw light into the apartments, and offer views to the historic sourroundings. Patterned brickwork is featured in large sections of the facades to provide a variety of texture and to emphasize variation in materials.

All buildings in the area speak the same language, but with a 100 year time gap, where the common idioms are red brick, black slate roofs, large surfaces, asymmetry and fondness for detail.

- PLH wanted to create a project that would fit into the special Free Port Area at the northern edge of Copenhagen by relating to the context that the houses were constructed in. The new constructions are created in materials referring to the surrounding area with dark bricks and slate roofed surfaces. The new project builds on the rectangular city plan of the area with views going from the harbour basin to the green areas of ‘Kastellet’.
