Sustainability

BREEAM Excellent

Making the most of its central location in Vilnius’ financial district, PLH Arkitekter’s design for The Ridge offers a unique, but at the same time harmonious, urban architectural expression that compliments the neighboring towers with a timeless look for a high quality mixed used building.

The architectural concept breaks the big high-rise into smaller, more human-scale volumes with plateaus functioning as verdant terraces that add green space even on the upper levels. While visually slimming down the building volume, the platforms grant tenants, residents and visitors views of the most iconic parts of Vilnius: Gediminas Castle, the old town and The Neris River.

To avoid the traditional “glassy” expression, while providing open views and natural light, the design contains a regular facade grid with slender elements made from light colored ceramic tiles with 3D effect as well as energy glass, featuring a series of solar shading slats in the workplace areas to provide copious amounts of natural light. The color palette is based on natural, neutral colors, matching both the contemporary office and the modern housing environment. The materiality of the facade and details inside the building are a reference to the ceramic brick masonry that the area is famous for.

One building – a multitude of functions

In The Ridge, commerce and lobbies are located on the ground floor, while floors 1-15 are designated to be offices and 16-28 to be apartments and penthouses.

The ground floor layout includes a lobby for office premises with three lifts and a residential lobby also with three lifts. Both lobbies include various spaces for interaction between office workers, residents and visitors. The remaining part of the ground floor offers commercial space and eateries.

The office space is designed to be flexible and easily customizable for tenants and features separate zones for different work types as well as access to recreational areas, such as either a green indoor lounge area or an outdoor terrace on every level in the building.

The residential floors have been designed with direct access from the lobby area. The apartments have all been placed to ensure the best views east, south and west overlooking the River Neris and the Old Town area. Balconies are provided in every apartment, while terraces are planned for larger apartments and penthouses.

Towering sustainable ambitions

The design of The Ridge has been centered around sustainable choices – both environmentally and socially – to achieve a BREEAM Excellent certification. BREEAM is the world's leading science-based certification system for sustainable built environments.

Among several features, The Ridge has an intelligent self-shading façade, long lasting materials and a layout that can easily be adjusted to fit changing needs.

Furthermore, the design includes a hybrid ventilation system with thermal uplift to save energy, control systems for optimal daylight and heat control, an intelligent roof with green sedum and a rainwater collection system as well as a one-of-a-kind photo-voltaic panel sculpture on a tower top showing weather forecasts to the citizens of Vilnius.
