PLH was asked to design a proposal for a new residential development on one of Svendborg Harbour’s most prominent sites. The design concept is based on opening up this prime harbour area and making it accessible to all.
Buildings are designed as longhouses, reminiscent of the original timber sheds that once occupied the site. This allows for increased visibility to the harbour basin and enhances the harbor atmosphere from afar.
Renovation and adaptation of the old warehouses for commercial and residential use are designed with respect for their heritage, and the new buildings are laid out in the same grid as the former timber sheds to preserve the harbour legacy.
Instead of establishing a dike for coastal protection, we have chosen to elevate the new building to a level of 3.5 meters. Thus, on the southern end of the site we are able to include a parking garage under the new buildings, and simply infill between the garage and the harbour with soil reclaimed from excavation.
