A safe space for the last moments of life
Sankt Lukas Stiftelsen
As the strategic advisor for the Sankt Lukas Stiftelsen new hospice project, our role was to advise and guide the client through the process of transforming an idea into reality through an architectural competition. It was a deeply meaningful project where humanity and empathy were at the heart of every decision, from the initial idea presentation and competition material to the selection of the competition winner. We ensured that the process reflected the project's core values, creating a safe space that truly supports both the emotional and physical needs of both patients, relatives, and staff.

Summary
Guiding and advising throughout the project
As the strategic advisor for the project, we began with an initial consultation with Sankt Lukas Stiftelsen to set the project framework, enabling them to secure funding. We then worked closely with hospice staff to assess their needs and requirements for the new hospice. Our involvement continued throughout the project as part of the Competition Secretariat. That included securing the process all the way through the competition – from preparing competition materials and prequalification to ensuring a smooth process in selecting the winning proposal.
Framework for the best idea to blossom
The competition was built around the premises of creating the best architectural idea. It was about creating the right feeling and mood; therefore, it was crucial to keep the competition guidelines open, providing flexibility for the best ideas to emerge. The goal was to create the right atmosphere, allowing the design to reflect the unique needs of the hospice environment.
Establishing the right foundation for the new hospice
Through our analysis, we identified three key perspectives that support Sankt Lukas Stiftelsen’s core mission: enhancing the quality of life for patients and their families. These perspectives – ‘Peace and homeliness’, Alone and together’ and ‘Arrival and farewell’ – formed the foundation of the competition material, guiding the design of the new hospice in ways that would support not only the patients and their families but also the staff. Following the prequalification process, four architectural firms anonymously entered the competition. BIG and Creo Arkitekter were selected as the winners by a unanimous jury. The jury praised the competition process and the empathetic approach of the winning design, which thoughtfully addressed the needs of the hospice’s patients.
