Elevating broadcasting through collaboration and flexible design
DR Byen
The media house DR, that brings together a wealth of expertise, undertook a remarkable relocation to Ørestaden Nord. PLH functioned as client advisor and interior design consultant and helped create a state-of-the-art workspace that balances innovation with functionality. Stakeholder management was key to ensure a flexible, adaptive design that met DR’s evolving needs. In addition to optimising workspaces, the project incorporated a significant recycling effort, repurposing existing furniture to create a sustainable and cost-effective solution.
A landmark project for Denmark
DR relocated to Ørestaden Nord, creating a new media hub spanning 130,000 m², including studios, workspaces, workshops, and a concert hall. PLH’s role was to guide the design process as client advisor and interior consultant, ensuring seamless coordination between the many stakeholders involved while addressing DR’s specific needs for production, collaboration, and sustainability.
Precious insights from 67 user groups
The success of the project hinged on careful stakeholder management. With over 50 user groups representing the departments and 17 user groups for the common areas, PLH quickly identified that flexibility and adaptability were key to accommodating DR’s diverse needs.
The design also had a full focus on sustainability, with a large-scale repurposing of furniture from DR’s previous locations, ensuring both environmental and economic benefits.
Dedication to flexibility and recycling
PLH created a flexible design framework that could adapt to DR’s varied departments and workflows. Collaboration across multiple user groups was key to ensure every need was heard. Another focus for the design was to repurpose existing furniture, giving it a second life at the new location and by that reducing waste. Post-move-in user meetings allowed PLH to make final adjustments, ensuring the space fully supported DR’s operations.
Paulette Christophersen, Partner, PLHBeing in the heart of an iconic organisation like DR, we quickly recognised that effective stakeholder management was crucial. This project required the delicate balancing of diverse needs across the organisation, whilst implementing new strategies for TV, radio and online production and programs. It was one of Denmark’s biggest user involvement processes with us as the coordinator and creative manager of stakeholders.
Overview of the role in the project, where PLH was the advising architect and interior designer for Segments 1-4.
