How to redefine workplace strategy
With the significant changes in workplaces in recent years, companies face unprecedented challenges in adapting to new employee expectations. At PLH we are continuously pushing boundaries in workplace strategy and design, advocating for flexible, hybrid environments that move you with their character, and foster employee well-being and inclusivity.
Many companies struggle to balance operational demands with the diverse needs of today’s workforce.
"Employees today are more critical towards their physical workplace than earlier. They dare to challenge the way of working, urging companies to take a more holistic look at how the workplace can best be designed to retain and attract them," says Paulette Christophersen, Partner and interior designer at PLH.
Having a too narrow perspective when recruiting and retaining talent, combined with a reliance on outdated workplace and facilities structures, risks alienating younger generations who expect more supportive, informal and adaptive environments. Therefore, considering factors such as zoning, work styles and technology can really give value to the employees and thereby the company.
Redefining workplace culture in hybrid work environments
In a post-COVID world, many companies are exploring flexible and hybrid work options. PLH advocates for a balanced workplace strategy, where physical and digital environments seamlessly coexist, and where the importance of relationships at work are in focus. In this evolving landscape, companies are encouraged to create workspaces that are worth commuting to – places that connect, inspire, motivate, and enhance productivity.
We advocate for clear guidelines on home and office work policies, enabling employees to choose environments where they feel most productive. Rather than relying on standard solutions, PLH customises workspaces to align with a company’s vision and objectives, ensuring they remain dynamic and responsive to evolving organisational and employee needs.
A strategy beyond aesthetics
Beautiful workspaces alone aren’t enough to keep employees engaged. PLH's design evolves from an understanding of how space impacts on our behaviour and well-being, and the positive impacts of fostering spontaneous interactions and creating a collaborative environment. By working closely with our clients to understand their culture and strategic objectives, we design spaces that bring value to the employees and the company.
Bine Soelberg, Creative Design Director, PLHVariation in a workplace is key for bringing out the best in people. People need to be able to move between various work settings depending on our need to focus, collaborate, brainstorm or have an informal chat. And workplaces must offer that.
So, what can companies do?
At PLH we take the lead in supporting our clients in a necessary evolution in workplace design. We know that adaptable, inclusive environments can help businesses succeed in a rapidly changing market.
Our best advice for companies creating workspaces that are as dynamic as the people working in them, is asking these questions:
- Does our workplace meet the expectations of the people we want to attract and retain?
- Does the workplace offer enough variety, whilst also having a unified identity?
- Will our workplace design endure over time?
