Embracing the diverse workforce and future-proofing workplaces
How can companies and organisations remain competitive and relevant in an increasingly diverse and dynamic workforce? Read the insights from our Partner within interior design, Paulette Christophersen, about future-proofing workplaces for the next generation.
What characterises today’s employees?
"Today's employees seek more than functional workstations; they crave welcoming environments that acknowledge their personal needs. We are more conscious that some employees are neurodivergent, with unique ways of processing information and working effectively – and not least, with new demands for their workplace."
What is neurodivergence?
"In the workforce, neurodivergence refers to individuals with cognitive differences such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others, who think and process information differently. These employees often bring unique strengths, including creativity, problem-solving, and attention to detail, while benefiting from tailored support like flexible schedules or sensory-friendly environments."
What should companies and organisations consider with Generation Z entering the workforce?
"Many companies will benefit from rethinking their workplace design to accommodate a new generation that values individuality/character, mental health, and work-life balance. This means inquiring about the current and future needs of the employees they want to retain and attract, especially those with competencies that are critical for growth of the business. And it also requires understanding the people – including a focus on neurodiversity, which is a growing imperative for future workplaces."
What is your best advise on how to design future-proof workplaces?
"The value lies in having a long-term, adaptable workplace strategy fit for the company identity, culture and ambitions. This requires a holistic approach, acknowledging that one size does not fit all. Instead of having a static physical workplace, companies must offer variety in design that accommodates diverse tasks and team dynamics, and seamlessly integrates tech needs. From multi-purpose meeting rooms to hybrid-friendly desks and adaptable spaces. This approach allows employees to thrive in workspaces tailored to their unique needs."
How do you create neuro-inclusive design?
"Neurodiversity in design is no longer a luxury; it’s essential. We always strive to incorporate sensory-friendly spaces, calming colours, and accessible layouts that support various neurodivergent needs. By understanding the nuances of workplace psychology, we can create environments that respect diverse cognitive experiences, ultimately bringing out the best in people."
What’s in it for the business?
"Studies show that companies that adopt strategies to include neurodivergent employees often experience increased creativity, innovation, and team synergy. We see that when talking to our clients exploring which value our design has brought."
