Architecture

Discipline

Architecture is about crafting the right frame for the people using the building. That requires making buildings that matter, create value and contribute to the client’s goals and vision. Above all, architecture is about bringing out the best in people.

The art of putting people first

A building is not just a building. At least not if architecture solves its main task, which is to create the right frame for the people. Whether we design headquarters, labs or central stations, we design to bring out the best in the people using the building.

That being said, of course architecture is about aesthetics. But the importance of the ones inside, spending their time and lives in the buildings, is a big priority of ours. This is why our design process always begins with the people. To bring people to the center of our design requires understanding them deeply. Active listening – grasping their challenges, ideas, and visions – is essential for a successful project. No-one is alike, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution in architecture.

Building for community and future generations

Embracing the Scandinavian mindset, we recognise being part of a community is fundamental. Contributing to the community and culture that the buildings are part of is a natural extension of this philosophy. Architecture is not only about drawings and spreadsheets. It’s about crafting buildings with soul and identity, while ensuring that they are comfortable to inhabit. Our projects aim to meet strategic goals and drive positive change. There are many paths to a successful outcome. It’s crucial to challenge perspectives while also knowing when to compromise, ensuring the building achieves its full potential. For architecture to endure the test of time, the buildings must be robust and transformative. This means they should be capable of evolving to meet future needs, which requires a deep understanding of their context and the people who use them.

I remember someone telling me that PLH’s buildings always feel nice, warm and accommodating to be in. That’s the essence of our architecture. We want to design buildings that make people feel – whether it’s feeling comfortable, good, happy, inspired, you name it. But how do you make people feel when entering a building? That requires giving the building an identity. A soul.
