Historic transformation in the heart of Copenhagen
Scandic Nørreport
Inside a building from 1917, Scandic has opened the doors to its first boutique hotel in Denmark. PLH designed the careful transformation of the historic property, which focused on preserving soul and character while creating a modern hotel experience. And, with its public rooftop bar, it’s a great spot for locals, too.

In their words
Mads Brockmann-Petersen, Hotel Director, ScandicThe tailor-made design and central location make Scandic Nørreport completely unique – a breathing space with direct access to all the metropolis’ experiences. A tremendous and extremely successful effort was made to transform the building so that we can welcome our guests in modern surroundings that have soul and personality.

Summary
A historic preservation full of challenges
PLH was tasked with renovating a century-old building in central Copenhagen for modern use as Scandic’s first boutique hotel. With the building serving multiple functions over the years, each floor had a different character. Additionally, strict sustainability requirements had to be met.
Complex transformation with complex requirements
A transformation of this complexity requires a highly adaptable and collaborative approach between project partners, and innovative application of modern technology.
A modern hotel with historic character
The finished hotel offers a truly authentic destination for guests, visitors and locals, who can all enjoy the city vista from its public rooftop bar area. Inside, the attention paid to the restoration makes for a modern hotel experience with lots of historic character. By 3D scanning the building, our architects were able to ensure
an optimal, new floor plan in interaction with the existing construction. It is the first Danish hotel to receive the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, in part due to the careful nature of the renovation.

Quote
Peter Rebild, Project Architect, PLHThe work with Scandic Nørreport has been complex but at the same time incredibly exciting and rewarding. We have continually been reminded of the building’s history, which has appeared behind every wall and under every floor. Thanks to the good collaboration with our partners, we have, instead of tearing it down, given the building new life and created a contemporary environment built around the historical framework.
