Summary
An iconic station for a growing metropolis
PLH was assigned to redesign the Riga Central Station by reimagining the city's infrastructure hub as a vital connector and urban focal point. The project integrates an iconic new station building, additional railway lines, a modernised bridge, and expansive green spaces, redefining the arrival and departure experience while embracing Riga’s cultural identity.
Honouring Riga’s heritage through design
The station's design draws from the arched geometry of global station architecture, blended with local Art Nouveau influences. Its vaulted ceilings evoke fern leaves, creating a light-filled, awe-inspiring space that offers travellers panoramic views of Riga’s historic skyline. A cohesive design language ties the station, bridge, and infrastructure into an integrated urban framework, honouring the city's architectural heritage while paving the way for future growth.
A green and connected urban hub
The project includes two new railway lines and a bridge featuring undulating cross-sections that reference the historic bridge’s arched design. Integrated pedestrian and cycling paths enhance accessibility, while green spaces introduce biodiversity and improve the city’s microclimate. By creating active, well-defined public spaces, the station becomes a vibrant, multifunctional hub – a seamless interchange for regional and local transit, urban recreation, and commercial activity.
