Bringing Viking history to life
Trelleborg
The new museum at Trelleborg Viking Fortress offers an multi-sensory and engaging experience by connecting the past with the present. Denmark's only preserved Viking shield was excavated near the remains of the neighboring Trelleborg Fortress, a shield which was lost in battle many years ago. This lost shield has served as the inspiration for the design. The new museum is discreetly located overlooking the fortress, wedged into the landscape to resemble the surface of a vast, emerging shield. Visitors can walk across the surface and survey views of the fortress and the surrounding landscape. With its interactive exhibits and stunning views, it enriches Slagelse’s cultural landscape and strengthens its position as a historical destination.
Søren Mølbak, Partner & CEO, PLHWe have recreated the atmosphere from the Viking era with an audio-visual universe consisting of exhibition space, the crackling of the fire in the café fireplace, tar-coated wood cladding on the exterior of the building and Viking sails decorating the façade. From the moment the visitor approaches the building, we have created a sensory experience for them where the boundaries between exhibition and architecture, past and present are erased.
