Paulette Christophersen, Partner – Interior Design, PLHTogether with Maersk, we have tapped into the immense potential of the prime waterfront location. At the same time, we have ensured better flow between the various facilities, creating stronger cohesion and a working environment that enables everyone to grow, thrive, and perform at their best. Every design choice was made to provide employees and visitors with diverse, stimulating, and meaningful experiences throughout the day. Maersk had the vision. We developed the concept and brought it to life in close collaboration with the talented project team.

Summary
A vision beyond the traditional canteen
Maersk tasked PLH with revitalising their canteen at the landmark Esplanaden campus in Copenhagen. The goal was to create a dynamic space that would go beyond a simple dining facility, becoming the heart of the headquarters – a place for employees and visitors to meet, work, and connect. The design needed to reflect Maersk’s values, support varied activities, and integrate sustainable solutions.
Transforming a dining space into a vibrant heart of campus life
The redesign was guided by the insight that traditional canteens are underutilised outside of mealtimes. To maximise the potential of the space, PLH divided it into smaller zones, each offering unique atmospheres tailored for different activities such as dining, group work, informal meetings, and town halls. This approach allows the space to remain lively and functional throughout the day.
A bistro for every need
The new bistro features 13 distinct zones, each designed with unique atmospheres to accommodate dining, collaboration, and relaxation. From the "Cosy Corner," an intimate space for quiet meals and small meetings, to the "Family Table," perfect for larger groups, every area provides thoughtful amenities such as integrated charging points for devices. The design incorporates innovative lighting systems that adapt to the time of day and season, creating warm and inviting environments for every occasion. Natural light floods the space through new skylights, while a garden room with access to a terrace offers opportunities to enjoy fresh air and stunning views of Øresund.
Redefining the workplace experience
By blending sophisticated lighting design, bold contrasts of dark and light tones, and seamless indoor-outdoor integration, PLH created a bistro that feels like a combination of a café, a restaurant, and a lounge. The space encourages employees and visitors to connect, collaborate, and recharge, making it a vital and versatile part of Maersk's Esplanaden headquarters.
