Transforming an industrial legacy into a vibrant urban community
Havnestaden
PLH transformed a 200,000 m² industrial site in Copenhagen into the thriving urban neighbourhood ‘Havnestaden’, combining restored historic buildings with new mixed-use developments. Anchored by green spaces, urban streetscapes, and waterfront connections, the project brings life to a once-industrial area.

Summary
Transformation from industry site to urban community
The project involved developing a masterplan to repurpose the former DS Industries site, known as "Sojakagen," into an integrated urban district. The aim was to balance historic preservation with contemporary functionality and create a dynamic mix of uses.
Modern community rooted in history
Key insights included the importance of leveraging the site’s industrial heritage, enhancing access to the harbour, and integrating green spaces into the urban community. A holistic approach was crucial to creating a neighbourhood that feels both modern and rooted in its history.
Robust masterplan still standing
PLH developed a robust masterplan structured around three core elements: The green axis, the urban promenade, and the waterfront connection. The project included restoring and repurposing industrial buildings, such as the Press Silo to residential spaces as well as designing office spaces for the Danish Medicines Agency and the Danish Health Authority as well as designing a new office building.
