Demand to stay attractive in a competitive retail industry
As online shopping increasingly challenges physical retail, Amager Centret realised the need for a transformation to keep attracting customers. The center, which appeared closed off and introverted, needed to make radical changes to future-proof itself.
Need to stay connected with the consumers
To stay relevant, shopping malls must now provide unique experiences beyond shopping itself and maintain a strong connection to their local community.
Integrated with the neighbourhood
PLH transformed Amager Centret into a modern retail experience while honouring its origins and status as a local icon. The redesign aimed to create an open, extroverted, and inviting space for the community, featuring Denmark’s largest plant wall, a green courtyard, and enhanced natural light for cosy café areas and gathering spots.
The courtyard now has multiple entrances, enabling outdoor café seating and an intimate atmosphere. Indoor streets received new paving and decorations, and the roof terraces were expanded for additional public space. These improvements have attracted more visitors and a broader consumer base.
