The new wing for Østofte School accommodates a primary school section with after-school care facilities that have been added due to the amalgamation of three rural schools within the Municipality of Maribo.
The primary school, comprising 0 to 3rd class, is accommodated in 8 classrooms that are grouped around a large double-height common space. The common space is utilised by both the school and the after-school care facility (SFO), and therefore emphasis has been on designing the space so that there is both a high ceiling and room for screened intimacy.
The interaction between the spatial architectural qualities and a good indoor climate has been given high priority. The configuration provides optimal conditions for thermal rise and supports the principle of controlled natural ventilation. The fresh air is drawn into the classrooms and disappears out again through the high-level windows in the common space.
