Situated in the former Freeport area of Copenhagen, Konkylien – “The Seashell” – is an early learning centre specifically designed for hearing-impaired children,

The center is comprised of two brickwork volumes of 2 and 3 stories and a lighter, welcoming corner building. The building includes a rooftop terrace and a technical plant that is set back from the facade.

The dark burnished brick facades provide a sense of cohesion with neighboring buildings, while the distribution of building volumes into two solid and one light echo the contrasting scales of the surrounding architecture. Façade design is varied, with large window elements and timber cladding. Common rooms face south and west, and deep window niches in the building’s interior create small “rooms within rooms” where children can play.
